Adding Hyperlinks to Shapes in Visio 2003

Visio drawings can represent a complete document in itself. However, often users find it necessary to provide links to additional documents, either on the web or to other documents such as a Microsoft Word document, Power Point presentation files or another Visio Document. Hyperlinks can also point to other shapes within the drawing or to a specific page in a drawing.

Linking to Another Visio Drawing

In order to link a specific shape in a diagram to another Visio drawing, select Insert > Hyperlinks from the main menu.

  1. Click Browse button in front of
  2. Address text box.
  3. Select Local File and pick the Visio file to be linked to

To link to a specific page within the diagram or to a shape on that page, click the browse button next to Sub-address text box and pick the page from the Page dropdown list.

Optionally, specify the Shape to which the selected shape should be linked to.

Enter a description that Visio will display when the mouse pointer is moved over the linked shape.

Once hyperlinked when hovering the mouse pointer over the linked shape, Visio will show a balloon help text displaying the description specified for the hyperlink in the above step.

Linking to a Document Other Than a Visio Drawing

In order to link a specific shape in a diagram to a document other than a Visio diagram, select Insert > Hyperlinks from the main menu.

Click the browse button next to the Address text box

Select Local File from the popup menu and pick the local file to link the selected shape to. When selecting a document other than a Visio drawing, you cannot specify a Sub-Address.

Linking to a Web Resource

In order to link a specific shape in a diagram to a document other than a Visio diagram, select Insert > Hyperlinks from the main menu.

Enter the URL in the Address text box or click browse to point to a web site address.

Click Browse button next to Sub-address to set a zoom level.
