Transforming Selections

Photoshop lets you transform the selections beyond the ability of the selections tools.

Transforming Selections - It is the ability to adjust the selections beyond the ability of the selection tools alone. Let us see how we can modify these.

  • Border Creates a border from the selection
  • Smooth Simplifies the selection
  • Expand Increases the size of the selection
  • Contract Decreases the size of the selection

Another method is to choose Select > Transform Selection. A bounding box and eight adjustment handles appear. To make modifications, drag the handles.

Quick Mask

To create a temporary mask of a selection. You can paint with all the painting tools and even use filters. It will look like a red brush with 50 % opacity. If you turn it off, the areas that were painted will become selections. You can use it to create a high-energy photo edge. To work with Quick Mask.

Click the Quick Mask tool on the toolbar. Paint with the brush tool wherever you choose. Instead of the paint color, you will see a red mask appear. Use the eraser tool to finesse your selection boundaries and also filters if you wish. When you have finished painting switch back to normal mode from the toolbar.

Matting

When you remove objects from their background there appears some halos called matting. The tiny white edges around the leftmost selection that give it an obvious cut-out look. There are three ways in which you can remove this background.

  • Defringe. For multi colored halo.
  • Remove Black Matte. Removes a dark halo.
  • Remove White Matte. Removes White halo
