You can delete all unused layers by opening the palette options menu and choosing delete Hidden layers.
Or,
Drag individual layers to the bottom of the layers palette. This will reduce the file size and free up the computers resources.

Create layer sets
You can create folders called layer sets that hold your layers. To create a layer set click the new layer set button. On the palette a folder with a downward facing arrow named set 1 appears. This is the layer set which is currently empty. To move layers from other parts of the layers palette into the layer set, simply drag and drop these into the Set 1 folder. The layers in the set are displayed below the folder.

Merging Layers
You can combine several layers into a single layer. This is called merging layers. When you merge layers the contents of the merged layers become a single image on the target layer.
Selecting Layers
Similarly you can also create selections from layers. You can use these selections to define parts of an image which can be manipulated while the area outside the selection is protected. The selections operate independent of the layers.
