Layer Effects
Layer effects add dimension and special effects to the layers. You can easily apply these effects and these are not limited to a single effect. You can save these to a library and recall them later. Layer effects do not work on a backgrounds or flattened images. You have to start with an active layer to apply the effect.
Layer Effects are used to add dimensions and special effects to the layers. We can add a single effect or an array of effects. To apply an effect, choose a layer by clicking it in the layers palette. Click the little f at the bottom of the layers palette. Select an effect from the drop-down menu. In the layer style dialog box make adjustments and click Ok.

You can add more than one effect to an image via the layer style dialog box. Let us see what each effect does,
- Drop Shadow adds a shadow under the layer and makes the layer appear to float in the air.
- Inner Shadow adds a soft shadow that makes the layer appear cut into the page.
- Outer Glow adds a soft glow around the layer.
- Inner Glow adds a glow on the inside of the layer.
- Bevel and Emboss adds a 3D look to layers.
- Satin applies sheen to the surface of the layer.
- Color Overlay changes the color of a layer object to a solid color of your choice.
- Gradient Overlay same as color overlay except a gradient is used.
- Pattern Overlay applies a pattern texture to your layer.
- Stroke adds a colored outline to your layer.
