Changing Layer Order and Hiding Layers
You can change the layer order by just clicking and dragging the layer in layer palette. Photoshop also helps you hide layers temporarily without deleting them. This feature helps in great artistic experimentation since you can include as many layers as you want and display only those that you want.
Changing the Layer Stacking Order
To change the order of layers, just click and drag a layer in the layers palette.
Background Layers
The background layer is identified by the word background in italics and displays a small padlock icon. The position is fixed and it does not support any transparency. You can fill colors and place images on the background layer, but there exists certain limitations,
- It is always at the bottom of the stack and you cannot change the order.
- Transparency is not available and you cannot adjust the opacity.
- The background is always locked and the position of the objects cannot be changed.
- Blending modes may not be applied to the background.

The background layer can be changed to a normal layer
- Double click the background layer.
- In the new layer dialog box that opens click ok or press enter.
- The background will be converted to a regular layer.
Showing and Hiding Layers
You can hide layers temporarily without deleting them. This helps in including as many layers as you want and display only the ones you choose. To hide/show the layers simply click the layer visibility icon.
