Changing Channel Modes

Photoshop helps you change from one mode to another. This allows you to add further colors and experiment with the images.

Grayscale Mode to RGB. Grayscale has no color present. If you want to add color to this image you would have to convert it to RGB mode so that channels are available in which to store the color. To convert to RGB mode Select Image > Mode > RGB. The image remains the same but we can add color to it.

Converting Color to Greyscale. We can convert a color image to grayscale. In the first method the channel will display the same image even though the palette includes color channels. The second method will just throw away all the color information and transfer all the grayscale information into the grayscale channel. The third method is a superior conversion method. Let us see the effects produced by of each one of these.

Select Image > Adjustments > desaturate. Convert to grayscale mode Create a new document with new channel information. Open an image that is in color mode.

Original Image

Select the best channel where the image looks good.

Open the fly out menu and choose duplicate channel. Name the new document.

The new document channel palette shows only one channel. The new channel looks exactly like the old one except this is a multi channel mode a special mode which lets you add or delete channels.

Grayscale Method

Change the image from Multi channel to grayscale mode by selecting Image > Mode > Grayscale from the main menu

You can notice the difference using this method makes compared to just converting to grayscale mode.
