Selling Something You Make

Is there a market for your own products?

Selling something you make is a great way to stock your store and make some money, as well as to get your name and product out there. There are so many things to sell on the Internet, and you can literally sell ANYTHING you make online (you of course need to follow any laws and legalities that apply). You can take a look at Etsy to get an idea of what the possibilities are, as well as just doing a general search on the web. Some things being sold there are photos, jewelry, art, buttons, wool, playground equipment chain link, signs, stickers, even food and music. So whether it be jewelry, art, journals, clothing, really anything is saleable with the wide-reach of the Internet.

The positives of selling things that you make:

  • You don't have to depend on someone else's manufacturing or timeframe's
  • Your only cost is what your materials cost
  • You have control over how many items you have in stock. You can make them as they are ordered or sell one-of-a-kind items
  • You can offer customization of your items, or special orders

The drawbacks of selling things that you make:

  • It's harder to determine a price as it's a handmade item, not mass-produced, but still needs to be reasonable
  • If you get too many orders, you may not be able to keep up with them (we all wish we had this problem-it would mean your business is successful!)
