Attaching Files to Messages

There are different ways to attach files in Outlook. This guide shows you what file formats you can attach and how to attach them

You can attach files to send word processing documents, pictures, video and music clips. You can even send programs to other people.

Elizabeth wants to send some photographs, music files and a nice card that she has designed to one of her friends. Let us see how this is done.

To Insert a File:

  • Create or open the item in which you want to insert a file attachment.
  • For messages, create a new message to insert an attachment.
  • Click in the body of the item.
  • Click Insert File button.

  • Select the file that you want to attach.
  • Click Insert.

  • In a new message, click Send.

  • In any other type of item, click Save and Close.

  • You can also click Select Insert> File to attach a file.

Note: By default, Microsoft Outlook blocks potentially unsafe attachment files (such as .bat, .exe, .vbs, and .js) that contain viruses.If you attach such a file to an e-mail message, you will be asked whether you want to send a potentially unsafe attachment.

To Insert an Outlook item

  • Create the item/message in which you want to insert an item.
  • Click in the body of the item.
  • If Microsoft Word is your e-mail editor, click the down arrow next to the paper clip icon.
  • Click Insert item. OR
  • Click item on the Insert menu.

  • Select the message or other item that you want to attach.
  • Click OK.

  • In a new message, click Send.
  • In any other type of item, click Save and Close.
