Protecting Your Document

There are important techniques you should apply to protect your Word documents from tampering.

Nick wants to protect his newsletter document.

To Protect using Digital Signatures

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab.

Click Digital signatures. Click Add.

Select the certificate you want to add, and then click OK.

To protect using MS Word features

Open the file.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Security.

Do one of the following

  • Create a password to open
    • In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK.
    • In the Reenter password to open box, type the password again, and then click OK.
  • Create a password to modify
  • In the Password to modify box, type a password, and then click OK.
  • In the Reenter password to modify box, type the password again, and then click OK

Protect your Macros/Templates.

This is important since Templates can store macro viruses.

Run up-to-date antivirus software on your computer, set your macro security level to high.

Clear the Trust all installed add-ins and templates check box. Use digital signatures and maintain a list of trusted sources.
