Inserting and Deleting Characters
As you type, you will eventually make typos or typing errors. You can easily correct them by either inserting new characters or deleting unwanted ones. You can even delete entire words.
To begin with, use the mouse to place the cursor where you want to effect a change, and left click.
Now, you can easily insert new characters:
- Begin typing where the cursor is blinking.
- You can also move the cursor by using the arrow buttons on the keyboard.
After typing, you realize that you would like to delete some characters. Here’s what you do:
- Pressing the Delete key will delete the character to the right of the cursor.
- Pressing the Backspace key will delete the character to the left of the cursor.
If you want to delete a whole sentence or an entire paragraph, deleting one character at a time can be very tedious. Instead,
- Select the text that you want to delete.
- Press the Delete key.
Activity: So far so good. Now, here’s a chance to test your new skills. You left some mistakes in the article that you typed. Make the following corrections by adding and deleting characters:
- Change ‘fap’ to ‘fast’
- Change ‘whitewater’ rafting to ‘white water’
- Change 'curts’ to ‘cuts’
Insert Text
To insert new text without losing the current content, you must be in the Insert mode.
- Look at the right side of the Status bar.
- If the letters "OVR" are grey, you are in the Insert mode.
- If the letters "OVR" are black, you are in the Overtype mode.
- To change to Insert mode, double-click the letters "OVR."
- The letters "OVR" are now grey.
Overtype Mode
In the Overtype mode, you can type over the current text, i.e., replace the current text with new text, without having to manually delete it. To do this, you must enable the Overtype mode.
- To change to Insert mode, double-click the letters "OVR."
- To change to the Overtype mode, double-click on the OVR tab in the status bar at the bottom of your document.
- Or, choose Tools > Options >Edit.
- Check the Overtype Mode box and click OK.
