Basic Linux Packages

Selecting the right packageaccording to the users needs

  1. Base Linux System - The OS itself
  2. Compilers (C, C++, Java, Lisp, Perl, etc.) - To compile and execute programs written in different languages
  3. Text Editors (GNU emacs, vi)- Powerful utilities that allow users to work with text files.
  4. FAQ lists, HOWTO documentation - Help with applications
  5. Networking (TCP/IP, UUCP, Mail, News) - Allows users to access the Internet, send, receive E-mail and subscribe to newsgroups
  6. TeX ,text processing system - A type setting/word processing software that allows users to typeset documents via text edition
  7. Tcl/Tk/TclX - The Tcl language and toolkit for X Windows
  8. Shells - User interfaces that command line interpreters
  9. X Windows System
  10. X Windows applications and games

A commercial distribution or version of Linux usually consists of the kernel along with select services, utilities, and applications. Each distribution of Linux comes with its own set of packages. Beyond the basic packages, the administrator may selectively install the most useful packages.
