Sorting
Here we go over some of the various techniques you can use to sort your rows and columns.
Sort a Range
Sean wants to prepare the list of students in the order of the marks obtained. To sort rows in ascending order (A to Z, or 0 to 9) or descending order (Z to A, or 9 to 0)
- Click a cell in the column you would like to sort by.
- Click Sort Ascending or Sort Descending.
Sort Rows by Two or Three Columns
For best results, the range you sort should have column labels.
- Click a cell in the range you want to sort.
- On the Data menu, click Sort.
- In the Sort by and Then by boxes, click the columns you want to sort.
- Select any other sort options you want, and then click OK.
Sort Rows by Months or Weekdays
1. Select a cell or range you want to sort.
2. On the Data menu, click Sort.
3. In the Sort by box, click the column you want to sort.
1. Click Options.
2. Under First key sort order, click the custom sort order you want, and then click OK.
3. Select any other sort options you want, and then click OK.
Sort Columns by Rows
Most of the time, you sort rows. This procedure sorts the order of columns.
1. Click a cell in the range you want to sort.
2. On the Data menu, click Sort.
3. Click Options.
4. Under Orientation, click Sort left to right, and then click OK.
5. In the Sort by and Then by boxes, click the rows you want to sort.
Note: The right-to-left sort order may only be available if support for a right-to-left language, such as Arabic, is enabled through Microsoft Office Language Settings. In addition, to use right-to-left features, you must be running a 32-bit Microsoft Windows operating system that has right-to-left support, such as the Arabic version of Microsoft Windows XP or any language version of Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3.
