Different Types of Charts

Excel comes with a number of standard, built-in charts. You can choose different options in an Excel chart to emphasize your data in different ways.

1. Column charts show data changes over a period of time or illustrates comparisons among various items.

2. Bar charts illustrate comparisons among individual items.

3. Line charts show trends in data at equal intervals.

4. Pie charts show the relative size of items that make up a data series.

5. XY (Scatter) charts show the relationships among the numeric values in several data series.

6. Area charts emphasize the magnitude of change over time.

7. Doughnut charts show the relationship of parts to a whole; however, it can also contain more than one data series.

8. Radar charts compare the aggregate values of a number of data series.

9. Surface charts are useful when you want to find optimum combinations between two sets of data.

10. Bubble charts are a type of XY (scatter) chart. They compare sets of three values and can be displayed with a 3-D visual effect.

11. Stock charts are commonly used for stock price data.

12. Cylinder, Cone, or Pyramid charts use cylinder, cone, or pyramid data markers to lend a dramatic effect to column, bar, and 3-D column charts.
