Components of a Chart

After having seen the various types of charts, Sean wants to know about the various components of a chart.

X-Axis

This is the horizontal axis known as category axis. A major tick mark identifies the position of each category.

Y-Axis

The Y-axis or value-axis is the vertical line on the left, to which the value of each data point is plotted.

Data Series

A data series is one of the sets of data from which the chart is drawn.

Chart Area

The rectangle that contains all the other chart components is called the chart area

Plot Area

In chart types that have an x-axis and a y-axis, those axes define the two sides of the rectangular plot area. You can change the border of that area or the pattern and the color of its interior. In 3-D charts, the plot area is made up of the two walls and the floor of the chart

Walls and Floors

The base area (plane in XY axis) in 3-D chart is known as floor and the vertical areas (YZ and XZ planes) are known as walls.

Chart Title

Chart Title is written at the top of the chart. This is the text that helps the user to identify the chart.

Axis Titles

These are the titles given to three axes, i.e, X,Y, and Z axis

Legend

To the right of the plot area is the legend, which identifies each of the data series. Each series can be uniquely identified by assigning to it a unique color or pattern.

Gridlines

These are the lines that run from each tick mark on the X-axis and Y-axis across the plot area. These lines can make it easier to identify the value of each data point within the chart.

Data Label

This is a label that provides additional information about a data marker, which represents a single data item or value coming from a worksheet cell.
