Working with Text
In this chapter we first go over how to enter, format and display text in your spreadsheets.
In This Chapter:
- Entering Text
- Having learnt about Worksheets and Workbooks, Sean now wants to use text to display non-numerical information such as student names and the marks they obtained in the second terminal examination.
- Adjusting Columns
- You can adjust the width of your columns to ensure your text data has enough room to display properly.
- Range of Cells
- Once you know what structure you want for your spreadsheet, you can start organising the columns and rows by naming ranges.
- Formatting Text
- Sean now wants to call attention to Excel cells/rows/columns, and spruce up the appearance of the document using the formatting features available in Excel. These features will let you change font size, type, and style, as well as alter text alignment and
- Aligning Text
- Alignment is the way in which data is placed within the boundary of a cell. By default, Excel applies the appropriate horizontal alignment to each of the data types. These include numbers, dates, text, formula, or time.
- Adding Borders
- Borders are a common way to mark your headings and divide your cells.
- Changing Column Width
- You can change column width and row heights to give your text more vertical and horizontal space.
- Shading Cells
- Shading cells is another formatting feature in Excel to help make the information easier to read.
- Inserting Rows and Columns
- Hey! Sean Riley has forgotten the column for SST. Will he have to erase the data in the column for Totals and enter the data for SST? No. That won’t be necessary. In Excel, all he has to do is insert a new column.
- Inserting and Deleting Cells
- Similarly, it is also possible to insert cells in your spreadsheet, instead of an entire row or a column. For example, if you want to add a new student as Roll No. 3, you will have to add a block of cells in the range B5:H5.
- More Formatting Features
- Let's explore some of the other formatting features in Excel, such as text wrapping, number formats and Changing the Orientation.
