My Account

Working with My Account

  • Going back to the sections on the left side of the page, there are several sections that come after "My Summary" that you can browse through. However, we will move on to the "My Account" section
  • This section is where you can change things such as your address, contact information, email preferences as well as look at your feedback and access your paypal account. Let's start by clicking on the "Personal Information" link. The first section is your account information:
  • Account Type- You will see currently this is listed as Individual. This is where you would go if you ever want to change your account from personal to business. You would click on Edit and follow the instructions.
  • User ID - You may change your user ID here, but it is not recommended unless necessary. Once you have used eBay for a while, people begin to recognize your username (hopefully as someone who they like to do business with!). However if you find you need to change it, you can click on edit to the right of your username and change it there.
  • Password - Here, you can change your password information.
  • Secret Question - You can change your secret question information here, which is helpful if you previously set it to something that is hard for you to remember.
  • About Me Page - Here is where you can add information about yourself such as your interests, what you collect, and if you are a seller, more information about your business.

The next section is where your physical and email contact information is as well as your alert contact information.

  • Registered email address - to change the email address registered with eBay, click on Edit next to your email address. Make sure you keep this up-to-date as this is where they will send any notices
  • Registered name and address - If you click on edit, you will see that there is more than one address listed or possible here:
    • Registration address - This is your main contact address, so it's important to keep this up to date and accurate.
    • Payment address - This is where you'd like buyers to send payments for items you sell. It will only be displayed to winning bidders or buyers if you accept payments by mail.
    • Primary shipping address - This is where you'd like to receive items you purchase.
  • Mobile number for SMS alerts - You can receive text message alerts on your cell phone either when an auction ends or if you've been outbid. You can also bid by replying to the text. This is good for when you are away from your computer, but keep in mind there is a fee for this service of 25¢ per auction item (up to 10 alerts on that particular item) and other charges that may apply including standard messaging rates charged by your wireless provider. To learn more about alert charges, visit eBay SMS Alert Charges. To add this service, click on the "Add" link.
  • Instant Messenger IM alert provider - You can receive instant message alerts when an auction ends or when you've been outbid. Again keep in mind that if you have IM activated on your phone, any charges for the service by your cell provider apply. After you subscribe to instant messaging alerts, you can bid again through a link in the Outbid alert. Currently the choices for this service are limited to AOL, Windows Live and Yahoo!.
