How to enter your item's description

  • Next, you will enter any additional information. In this example, some choices have already been provided by eBay because of the type of item being sold. You will be given a drop-down for condition and the choices in this case are New-Never Used, Used and Refurbished. Make sure you are truthful about the condition!
  • The next section includes the information gathered by eBay that you can choose to include in the listing. If it is applicable it is always good to include the information, remember the more information, the better! You can click on the Preview link to view how it will look.
  • The next section, the description, is possibly the second most important section in a listing. This is where your buyers will go to find out more about the item you are selling. It's okay to repeat things that are listed elsewhere here such as condition, model number, in fact you want to put all the info you can here! Also make sure that you check spelling, you always want to make sure there aren't errors, it doesn't make for a professional looking listing. You can use the tools along the top just like you would in a word editing software, such as Bold, Underline, alignment and text color. Think of what looks appealing to you when you are surfing the net and try and format yours in a similarly eye-pleasing way. However keep in mind that you also need to make it appealing to others. Some people don't like to read white text on a black background as some find it hard to read. So personalize it, but not so much that it turns people away or makes it hard for them to look at your listing. You can take a look at other people's listings to get an idea of what you should say and how they lay them out, as well as what not to do!
  • Here are some suggestions to keep in mind when writing your description:
    • Don't write in all capitals. In the online world, not only is this hard to read, but it all capitals is considered to be yelling.
    • Don't write all your information in one long paragraph; it's hard to read and doesn't make it very interesting.
    • Use bullets and bold to emphasize key points or functionality
    • Buyers will have questions, so try to think of these ahead of time and include them in your description. What questions would you ask about an item? Chances are someone else would too. Some buyers may not want to go through the hassle of asking a question, so include as much information here as possible and you won't lose out on that possible sale!
  • eBay gives you a choice to add a good-looking background. For 10¢ it's a good idea to use this option until you get comfortable enough to start getting bold with your listings (by using HTML and other layout options).
  • Choose a theme that matches what you are selling. For example if you are selling books, choose the "Books - Image" choice. You can also choose where you want the pictures to be shown, on the left, right, bottom or top. Again, you can look at other's pages to see what is appealing. You can also click on the Preview link to see what it will look like.
  • There is also an option underneath that to show or hide a counter. This will show how many people have looked at your item. This is an individual choice.
