Creating Your Listing

Let's start our listing

Now that your research is done, let's start our listing. For this example we will start a brand new listing (not by clicking on Sell one like this or using a template).

When starting your listing, keep in mind that whatever time you start your listing will be the time that it ends. For example, if you submit the listing at 2am PST, and you choose for your auction to run for 7 days, in 7 days at 2am PST is when the listing will end. Remember that you are selling something and want to target as many potential buyers as you can. Ending your item at 2am may not be a great idea as there aren't very many people up at that time to bid on your auction, and sometimes the bidding fury happens towards the end of the auction. On the same note, starting it at 8am when alot of people are getting ready for work and not yet on the computer may not be such a great time either. There are many sites on the internet that give hints on the best times to start and end auctions.

  • To get started selling, click on the "Sell" tab at the top of the page
  • This will bring you to a screen that walks you through getting started. You will probably be taken to a screen that prompts you to create a seller's account. This is not a separate account, it is just required as there are additional steps you must complete in order to sell such as entering a credit card. This is because there are some fees that you will have to pay in order to list your item. (You will also want to register for Paypal if you haven't already so that you can accept paypal payments for your item).
  • Before you list your item, you may want to check out eBay Seller policies. Once you have read the policies
  • Once you have entered your credit card information and read the policies you should now be brought to a screen prompting you to enter what you would like to sell.
  • In this example we entered HP Photo Smart Digital Camera. Click on Sell It and the next screen will give you category suggestions as to where you should list your item.
  • Choose the category that best fits what you are selling. If you only choose one category, eBay will suggest another category or you can choose to only list in one category. There is an additional fee for listing in more than one category.
  • After you choose the category, you may be given another search tool to find your specific item. If you choose to do so, it can automatically provide details on your item based on manufacturer's information. This is a good option if you can find your item as the more information you can give your customer, the better.
  • If you chose your item from a list, you will have alot of the information filled in for you, but you will still need to add more details to the title, condition and other aspects; you don't want to leave the default information as is, always add more!
  • The next page will allow you to edit the listing details. When creating or adding the title, avoid using words like WOW or EXCITING! You may see others do this but you have a limited character space here and this is what the search is looking at. So ensure that you include things like a model number, brand, size, color or other pertinent information that will tell a prospective buyer what it is without having to dig down in the description. In the screenshot below you will see that it automatically entered information for the item in the title. You would want to add a model number and any other pertinent information here. You can also add a subtitle for an additional 50¢ here.
