Opening An Account

What do you need to do to open an Ebay account? Which type of account is right for me?

What You Need to Open an Account

In order to buy or sell on eBay, you will need to create a unique account. You will need to provide your contact and location information, a valid email address. You will also need bank account or credit card information handy as you cannot complete a transaction without adding an account.

Which Type of account is right for me?

To open your account, go to eBay Registration. Or go to eBay's main page and look for the link that says "register". If you are looking to open a personal account, fill in the information here; however if you are wanting to open a business account, you need to fill out a different account registration - eBay Business Account. The main difference in the two is mainly the way in which you will be listed, do you want to be listed as an individual or a business when people are purchasing and interacting with you. Secondly, you will have options tailored to your business needs when choosing a business account. And don't worry if you choose personal now and want to switch at a later time, you can always do that. So let's walk through the registration process. Once you click on the registration link, you should see a page that looks similar to the screenshot below:

  • If you are registering as a personal account and not a business, fill in your information as requested above.
  • Make sure you check the availability of the user ID you are selecting to ensure it is available.
  • Check the box to agree to the eBay user terms (assuming you do) and click on continue.
  • You should then come to a screen that looks like the one below. Check your email for the registration email sent from eBay.
  • The email you receive should look like the screen below. Click on "Activate Your eBay Membership"
  • This will then take you to a page that looks like the one below:
