Car Payment or Transportation Fees
Statistically speaking, most people have both cars and car payments. However, statistics only speak in general terms and do not cover absolutely everyone in every possible scenario. Many people do not own cars. However, everybody still needs to get around town and no matter how you do it, it is going to cost you some money. That money has to be recorded in your budget.
If you do own a car, you may or may not be making payments on it. Most likely, at least according to those same statistics, you will be making some types of payments on your vehicle. This payment if you have one is the only figure that should go here; with one exception at least.
This is not the area to put general maintenance costs for your vehicle. This is not the section to include all of your gasoline costs, nor is it a section for any cosmetic work or cleaning you may have done on your automobile. This is for the car payment only; except for that one exception.
Some people do not own a vehicle for whatever reasons. Some people do not know how to drive, some others do not like to drive and some are prohibited from driving for a variety of different reasons. For those people, it is still necessary to get out and about on the town.
Whether they are going to and from work or going out for a night out or even just going to the grocery store, the chances are pretty good that they will need to use some sort of transportation in order to get around. Not very many people have the luxury of having everything from their place of employment to their store all within walking distance.
Most of these people will need to use either a bus, taxi or some other form of transportation in order to get around town and take care of all of their business. These travels cost money and that money has to be paid in order for them to get where they are going and do what they have to do. This money that is being spent is called a travel expenditure. Since it is money that must be spent, it must be recorded in the budget so that it can be properly accounted for.
For some of these people the entire process is quite simple. Many of the people who use exclusively one single form of transportation, usually buses, are able to buy travel vouchers for a single price each and every month. For these people, the cost of that monthly ticket is the amount that will go in this category of the budget.
For some other individuals, life will never be that simple. For a variety of reasons, many people are forced to utilize a combination of methods for travel. Many people have to buy too many groceries at the store to be able to carry them on the public buses. It will be necessary for them to use taxis or other means of transportation each and every time that they go shopping.
Other people work or live well off the bus lines and are forced to find other means of transportation as well. For these people, it is not so simple as plugging in one little number and neatly summarizing every cost that they will incur along with their travel expenses every month.
Hopefully these people have been paying attention to their habits and will know roughly how much they are spending every month. It may take some time to figure everything out and write it all down but it should be pretty common knowledge. For example, multiply the cab fare from the grocery store by the number of times you go shopping each month.
If bus passes or vouchers are used, add those costs as well to the total amount. Add any additional fares or transportation fees that will be necessary throughout the month and that should give you at the very least; an informed idea of how much your costs will be for the month. In the best instances, you should know almost exactly how much you will spend.
Gasoline
Gasoline is one of those many areas that seem so blatantly obvious at first that it is a wonder it should even have its own section. At first glance many things seem deceptively easy. This section is for gasoline for your car and any that you may use around your home.
Perhaps you have two cars, do you know how much gasoline is being put in the other vehicle? Is there someone else driving it and filling it up on a regular basis? How about in the garage? Is there anything in there that uses gasoline? Many people take care of their own lawns. Long gone are the days of young boys making a living cutting people’s grass.
Nowadays there are landscaping agencies that bring in full crews to do the work that was once passed down to the neighborhood kids trying to get money for their personal use. Many people cannot afford the services of complete crews to do this work and they are now doing it themselves in order to save a little more money.
Weed eaters, lawnmowers, edgers and many other tools that used to lie around the house now have to be used on a regular basis. Some people even keep those tools behind their boat. Is the boat going to be used? If it will, do you have the money in your budget to buy the gasoline?
One man budgeted his gasoline costs every month and never could figure out why the figures never matched what he spent. When he finally sought advice on his budget, he was amazed at how simple the solution was. When he factored in the fuel needed for all of these other things, including his wife’s car and the boat, he saw why his budget continually came up a few hundred dollars off each and every month.
While it may seem painfully obvious at first, many people will only calculate the obvious and conveniently or even unknowingly disallow relevant information because it is not right there looking them in the face. Checking each and every category to make sure that it includes every cost which is relevant to the household for the month will allow the budget to be more in line with reality.
