Bills, Bills, and more Bills
Rent or Mortgage
Whether you own your own home or simply rent a place somewhere, chances are better than not that you will have a mortgage of one sort or another. This is the simple amount due for either the mortgage payment or the rental cost of the place where you live. This amount does not include anything other than the amount of money which is owed either for a rental or a home mortgage payment. Other areas of the budget are available for the additional costs of living associated with having your own place.
Electric Bill
The electrical bill is the cost of having electrical power in your home. It is not for the electrical bill for your office if you have one or for any other rental properties or any other place. This section is only for the electrical bill for your primary residence.
Water Bill
Sometimes the water bill will be included on the electrical bill with all of the utilities together. Occasionally it will be on a separate bill. Even if the price is included in the electrical bill or buried in with one of the other utilities it is important to keep all of the bills separated on the budget so that you can keep track of expenditures for each individual item. Accurate record keeping can start with your budget even if you have never kept detailed records in the past.
Natural Gas or Propane Bill
Like many of the utilities, this bill will often be buried within the depth of another utility bill. This is actually very common and should not put anyone off or prevent them from keeping separate records. Only be keeping statistics on each and every bill can the total amounts and usage be calculated.
This is especially important for homes in areas prone to cold when it comes to the gas bill. Gas is frequently used as a means to heat not only water but dryers and sometimes even entire homes. Especially if the gas will be used to heat the home, than keeping track of usage should be a priority.
Gas usage whether from propane or natural gas will fluctuate and even more so in some of the colder regions. This will cause the bill itself to fluctuate as well. Keeping individual records of the gas used will help you to better budget your financial expenditures by giving you averages on a per month basis.
Trash or Garbage Collection
Once again, this bill is usually tucked away somewhere inside another utility bill somewhere. If you live in a complex of some sort or another than chances are pretty good that you will never even see this bill at all. Unlike many utilities, many people do not even realize that there is an actual bill for garbage collections. The municipality may, in fact bill this service completely separately or subsidize it through funds gained by taxes.
Some municipalities force the homeowners to make a choice between private companies and contract the chore out to independent contractors. These contractors then bill the clients directly, at least in most instances. No matter how your garbage is removed, make sure to keep an accurate record of both the cost of removal and the payments made.
While this may not seem like one of the most important bills, imagine if it was not paid and the garbage began piling up around the house. This bill should not fluctuate very much but utility cost increases eat up a big portion of many people’s budgets and they have no clue why their utility bills suddenly seem to go up so quickly. Many times, paying close attention to the bills themselves will help you to avoid many difficulties later on and trying to figure out something that you should have already known.
Home Maintenance Costs
If you own your own home, you know that it costs money not only to keep it nice, but to keep it as a safe and secure environment for you and any others who may live there. The costs associated with owning your own home go far beyond the simple monthly mortgage payment.
If you rent an apartment or a home you can always call the owner or the property manager when the garbage disposal breaks at two in the morning. Unfortunately, when you own your own home, there is nobody else to call and nobody to hold responsible for the damage and the costs of repairs other than yourself.
Depending on the environment you live in, you may find it necessary to paint your home as often as every three or four years. While you can fuss, holler and complain all that you want to about the high costs of home ownership, you cannot pass the bill off to anyone else. It has become your responsibility alone to take care of all of the costs of maintenance and upkeep.
Many maintenance issues can and should be planned and carried out on a regular basis. The regular costs of preventative maintenance will always be the easiest to figure out and thus, to enter into this category of the budget. All of the costs associated with the maintenance and repair of your home should be included here.
There are many benefits to budgeting and keeping track of these costs. Not the least benefit by any means is the tax liability of the home. The expenditures associated with maintaining and keeping your home, are often a tax deductible expense. That means that you will not have to pay taxes on any of the money spent here at the end of the year. While you may have a difficult time explaining the costs of a gold plated bathroom set, many otherwise expensive propositions concerning the repairs of the home can now be worked in your favor.
While it may have been nicer being able to call someone at any time of the day or night to get something important or even inconsequential, fixed or repaired at your whim, the benefits of owning a home far outweigh those of renting in most instances for most people. When the additional benefits are factored in as well, it can be easy to see why this is not only an important, but a valuable part of any household budget.
