Difference between Servers and PCs

Where does the difference lie between a server and a PC when it comes to hardware and functionality? Server brands will also be discussed in this section.

Is the software for a server any different from the software ;of a personal computer?

As you now know, the server is a specialized computer that has special needs. If you are thinking of putting Windows XP or a Macintosh O/S on a server then your server may be handicapped. Windows and the Mac O/S are designed to cater to the needs of a person while servers are supposed to cater to specific needs, which happen to be highly variable. Today, the most popular operating systems for servers are the GNU-Linux, the Solaris, and the FreeBSD.

What server brands are dominating the market today?

There are many server brands that are dominating the market today. Again, a different stroke for every folk. One type of server may be good for a particular task but may be an underperformer on a different task. In any case, it would still be great to mention the top performing servers like Cybertron, Sybase, Fujitsu, Systemax, Visionman, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, and IBM.
